Bryan C. McCannon

Bryan C. McCannon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at West Virginia University and the Associate Director of the Center for Free Enterprise. His research focuses on the intersection of Public Choice and Law and Economics. Dr. McCannon has investigated plea bargaining practices, the incentives faced by prosecutors such as re-election pressure and how it affects criminal justice outcomes, and the impact of experience and pay on judicial quality to name a few. His work has even explored arbitration procedures and the legal system of Classical Athens. The unifying feature of his work is the recognition from Public Choice that public actors are regular humans interested in maximizing their own well-being which includes not only doing their job well, but advancing their careers, improving their financial well-being, and enjoying leisure. Incentives created by the institutions public actors operate within affect how they handle their jobs. Dr. McCannon has been teaching for 20 years and has approximately 70 scholarly contributions to date. He received his BA from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1998 and his PhD from Pennsylvania State University.
