Call for Papers: Ensuring a Reliable, Affordable, and Equitable Clean Energy Transition

The Center for Growth and Opportunity at Utah State University invites submissions to its working paper series that explore the economic impacts and opportunities created by the ongoing clean energy transition in the United States. There is a growing need for research that not only examines the effects of clean-energy policy on the reliability and affordability of energy, but also the role of innovation and new technology in making affordable, reliable clean energy a reality for all.

Experts anticipate that climate change will lead to more extreme weather events, temperature variability, and resource disruption. Concerns continue to mount that these negative impacts will fall most heavily upon low-income and minority communities. At the same time, current efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change may already be having a disproportionately negative impact on these communities through rising electricity prices, unreliable energy supplies, and increased cost of living.

We invite submissions that answer the overarching question:

How can innovation and public policy ensure an equitable transition to reliable, affordable, and clean energy in the US?

Submissions that seek to answer one or more of the following questions are especially welcome:

  • How do policies intended to reduce carbon emissions impact living standards and affordability in cities where they are implemented? How have state electricity market reforms impacted reliability, affordability, and innovation in electricity distribution?
  • What is the role of non-renewable, clean baseload technologies like nuclear and geothermal energy in reaching our sustainable energy goals in a cost-effective way?
  • How will competing demand for battery storage from utilities and electric vehicle manufacturers impact the cost and availability of batteries?
  • What impact are state and federal policies having on rising electricity prices, and how are increasing prices affecting energy insecurity?
  • How will the shift away from fossil fuels and towards green energy impact labor markets?

Submission Details: Please submit a brief proposal that describes your research question, your intended methodology, and how your research will contribute to policy discussions around energy policy by March 15, 2022. Proposals should be submitted to Jennifer@thecgo.org.

Honorarium and support: Authors of accepted papers will be eligible to receive a $2,000 honorarium, robust feedback on their research, assistance from student research fellows, and outreach and media support to help maximize the reach and impact of their findings. Papers will be published in CGO’s working paper series before submission to an academic journal.
