Matt Perault

Matt Perault is the director of the Center on Technology Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also serves as a professor of the practice at the School of Information & Library Science at the University of North Carolina (UNC). Alongside his academic role, he is also actively engaged as a technology policy consultant.

Before his affiliation with UNC, Matt held leadership positions at Duke University, where he led the Center on Science & Technology Policy and served as a professor of the practice at the Sanford School of Public Policy.

Prior to his academic endeavors, Matt gained valuable experience working at Facebook. During his time there, he held the position of director on the public policy team and led the global policy development team. His responsibilities included addressing various issues such as antitrust, law enforcement, human rights, and policy formulation concerning emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and virtual reality. In July 2019, he had the opportunity to testify before Congress on matters related to the competitiveness of the technology sector.

Before joining Facebook, Matt served as Counsel at the Congressional Oversight Panel. He also worked as a consultant at the World Bank and had the honor of serving as a law clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Matt’s educational background comprises a law degree from Harvard Law School, a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy, and a Bachelor’s degree in political science from Brown University.
